What it's about:
After witnessing the brutal murders of a convenience store owner and son, firefighter Jeremy Coleman narrowly escapes with his own life. As he is forced to testify against the crime lord, Hagan, he is placed in the witness protection programme under the watch of the U.S. Marshalls. As his new identity becomes compromised, Jeremy is forced to take an unexpected course of action in order to get his life back and save the lives of those he loves.
What we thought:
This is a story about being at the wrong place at the wrong time and how it changes your life.
From the moment this movie started I was sitting at the edge of my seat. I have to say that while the plot is predictable it had a nice flow to it, the movie moved along smoothly and swiftly and I wasn't bored at any point during the movie.
Josh Duhamel shined in his performance. He is a good guy forced to do bad things. When he starts on his path of vengeance he is reluctant and scared until he realises it’s either kill or be killed. But this in no way made it easier for him throughout it all; he is conflicted between doing the morally right thing and protecting the ones he loves. His actions are those of a desperate man and you can't help but feel for him.
I liked that they maintained the image of his character throughout the movie. Too many times in movies like this the avenger discovers 'super powers’ like: knowing how to fight, being street smart, knowing how to execute the ‘perfect crime’, turning off their humanity. Jeremy maintains who he is, he is not a street smart criminal, he is just a normal guy somewhat forced down this path.
In polar opposite to Josh's good guy, Vincent D'Onofrio plays the bad guy. He's delivery of crime lord Hagan is cold and calculating.
Bruce Willis plays more of a supporting role in the movie. He has a personal vendetta against Hagan after his partner was brutally killed. It’s not always that you see Bruce Willis take the back seat in an action flick. He portrays the sage, work weary lieutenant to a T.
This movie has a little bit of everything: action, comedy, drama and romance, and while it may not win awards it is still entertaining to watch. I mean who doesn’t like seeing a good guy win in the end?
