Georgia Rule

What it's about:

Rebellious teenager Rachel (Lindsay Lohan) screams, swears, drinks, says whatever is on her mind and is just generally uncontrollable. With her latest car crash, Rachel has broken the final rule in mom Lilly's (Felicity Huffman) San Francisco home. With nowhere else to take the impulsive and rambunctious girl, Lilly hauls her daughter to the one place she swore she'd never return... her own mother's Idaho home.

But as Rachel succumbs to her summer of misery and starts to shake up the tiny town, matriarch Georgia (Jane Fonda) - who is not your typical sweet and doting grandmother - notices something is changing within her granddaughter. Given structure and responsibilities, she is letting her guard down and learning compassion... especially for her own mother. Her journey will lead all three women to revelations of buried secrets and an understanding that, no matter what happens, the family ties that bind them will never be broken.

What the critics say:

"The subject matter is grim, the relationships are gnarled, the worldview is bleak, and, at any given moment, you suspect someone's going to be hit with a pie."
John Anderson, Variety

"Strong performances and its R rating help keep Georgia Rule from being a completely overemotional, Lifetime TV mush fest, but only slightly."
Kit Bowen,

"This strained dramedy falls well outside of the director's comfort level."
Michael Rechtshaffen, Hollywood Reporter

"It's Fonda who represents the movie's real lost opportunity. Now that she's back, which filmmaker is going to win the prize for figuring out how to put her gifts, and her looks, to use?"
Stephanie Zacharek,

"Georgia Rule, directed by Garry Marshall from a script by Mark Andrus, swerves and spins, taking its predictable plot in some surprising directions."
A.O. Scott, New York Times
