King's Ransom

2006-03-30 13:09

Anthony Anderson stars in the comedy King's Ransom as Malcolm King, a wealthy and arrogant businessman whose soon-to-be ex-wife (Kellita Smith) has plans to take him for everything he's worth in their divorce settlement. Determined to avoid losing his fortune to her, Malcolm plans his own kidnapping with the help of his dim-witted mistress (Regina Hall) and her ex-con brother (Charles Murphy). But Malcolm's plans go hilariously awry when he discovers that he is not the only one with a scheme to kidnap and hold him for ransom.

What the critics are saying:

"The desperately unfunny kidnapping farce King's Ransom is the cinematic equivalent of trampled chewing gum on a subway platform."
- Stephen Holden, The New York Times

"Devoid of anything resembling wit or even guiltily amusing tasteless gags, the film lurches from one haplessly staged sequence to another, with the performers vainly struggling to infuse humor into the proceedings."
- Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter

"Somewhere in a pitch meeting someone must have piped up: 'I know. We'll have a guy named 'King' and he gets kidnapped, see? So there's a 'ransom'! King's Ransom, get it? After that, I've got nothing.'"
- Kevin Crust, Los Angeles Times

Beware - this may well be the worst comedy of the year - avoid it at all costs.
