What it's about:

Agatha Weiss (Mia Wasikowska) gets a job as movie star Havana Segrand's (Julianne Moore) assistant, after she is released from a sanatorium, despite it being against the wishes of her psychoanalyst father (John Cusack).Agatha strikes up a friendship with an aspiring actor/screenwriter, Jerome (Robert Pattinson), who works as a limo driver, whilst simultaneously being put to the sword by diva Havana who is driven to the point of insanity by her obsession with the remake of a film that starred her own mother, in which she wants the lead role.

What we thought:

Selling itself as a drama, it is difficult at first to make out what Maps to the Stars really is about.

With a slow start, no relation between frames and no clear storyline, I found it difficult to interpret the underlining meaning of the film.

The Weiss family – made up of the father Straford (John Cusack), a self-help guru, Christina (Olivia Williams), the fame obsessed mom who’s made it her mission to protect her drug addicted son, Benjie (Evan Bird) – are filled with fear when their estranged daughter is released from the nut house where she was treated for almost killing her brother (criminal pyromania).

Things get interesting when Agatha (Mia Wasikowska), the schizophrenic daughter, gets hired as a PA by a famous actress who is also one of her father’s clients.

A threesome, some more drugs, weird cult chants and a murder follow and the movie ends pretty much the way it started.

Although the personas portrayed in the film seem to be dark in a very weird way I applaud good acting as Julianne Moore, who plays the famous actress Havana Segrand, portrays her character brilliantly.

Robert Pattinson acts as a cab driver and although it’s not that hard to do manages to nail the whole mysterious lover role on the head.

If you’re into a plot that doesn’t really makes sense but finds a way to relate all the characters into the same circle then you will get your money’s worth.

However, reliance on the thrilling trailer that tells a completely different story of what the movie is about will disappoint you.
