What it's about:

In the early 1970s, there were two basketball leagues in America – while the NBA ruled the sport, the ABA was defined by its outlaw flair and sensational showmanship. Jackie Moon (Will Ferrell), the one-hit singing sensation behind "Love Me Sexy", relishes his role as owner, coach and power forward for the fictional Flint, Michigan Tropics of the ABA. But when the NBA announces a plan to merge with the ABA and only take with them the four teams with the best records, disbanding the rest of the ABA squads forever, Moon, assisted by former NBA benchwarmer Monix (Woody Harrelson) and flamboyant Clarence "Downtown" Withers (André Benjamin), decides to rally his motley team for an unlikely eleventh-hour pursuit of acceptance and glory.

What the critics say:

"A comedy air ball."
David Cornelius,

"Semi-Pro is a mess, but it's a likable one."
Kirk Honeycutt, Hollywood Reporter

"Jackie Moon is every other Will Ferrell character in John Stockton shorts."
Stephen Himes, Film Snobs

"Even when the script, by Scot Armstrong, shoots airballs, Ferrell is a slam-dunk."
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"Judging from this low-scoring sports comedy about the mystique of men with balls, Will Ferrell needs to call a time-out from belly baring to refocus his fan-favorite game of playing clueless male doofuses."
Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

"You take the Will Ferrell formula and you plug it in, but somehow it just feels kind of uninspired and flat."
Richard Roeper, Ebert & Roeper
