The Exorcism Of Emily Rose chronicles the trial of the priest accused of negligence resulting in the death of the young girl believed to be possessed by demons.

When Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter) leaves home to attend college she has no inkling of what awaits her. Alone in the dorm one night, she has her first terrifying 'hallucination'.

As her attacks become ever more frequent and severe, Emily, a devout Catholic, chooses to undergo an exorcism conducted by her parish priest, Father Richard Moore. When she dies Father Moore is charged with negligent homicide.

Erin Bruner (Laura Linney), a high-profile defence lawyer reluctantly agrees to represent Father Moore. As the trial progresses, Erin's cynicism and atheism are challenged by Father Moore's unwavering faith and by the inexplicable events that surround the case.

What the critics are saying:

"Inserting a dose of horror into a standard courtroom drama, writer-director Scott Derrickson and co-writer Paul Harris Boardman have constructed a well-cast yet dopey tale that is much less than the sum of its parts."
- Kevin Crust, Los Angeles Times

"The no-nonsense ferocity of Linney's defense attorney binds this split-personality film, keeping us in the game whenever it threatens to buckle under the combined weight of ambition and silliness."
- Jan Stuart, Newsday

"Director and co-writer Scott Derrickson thinks he's not ripping off the 1973 Exorcist, presumably because his effects are too tacky to work up a scare or a convincing case for possession."
- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

This muddled film tries to mix edgy horror with courtroom drama, but never quite succeeds.
