The Hitcher

What it's about: Holidaying couple Grace (Sophia Bush) and Jim (Zachary Knighton) reluctantly give John Ryder (Sean Bean) a lift, after almost running him down. But in no time at all John reveals himself to be a dangerous psychopath, and Jim kicks him out of the car after he pulls out a knife. However, the danger doesn't end there as the madman tracks the couple across the countryside, leaving a trail of corpses in his wake.

What we thought of it:
What the South African film going audience needs now is another remake of a cult classic horror movie, because otherwise, God knows, our teens might start to think for themselves. For anyone who really cares, The Hitcher was a surprise hit in 1986, starring B-movie king Rutger Hauer. It was a taut combination of chills, violence and suspense, and kept audiences on the edge of their seats until the end.

Unfortunately this Hitcher is a dud on every front. Perhaps it is cheaper to re-use an old script than write a new one, because The Hitcher of today looks and feels like a made-for-TV excuse for a film.

Sean Bean is probably the only "real" actor on board. He has a couple of moments, but otherwise shambles along without much conviction. The characters of Grace and Jim might as well be shop mannequins for all the presence they bring to the screen, and it reflects very poorly on a horror film when the death of each character barely raises an eyebrow.

For horror fans there is a single inventive death, but for anyone else, this is just tired rubbish. Rather watch the original on DVD..
