What it's about:

In this heartwarming comedy, minor leaguer Carlton Garret (Justin Timberlake) takes an unexpected road trip to track down his estranged father, legendary baseball player Kyle Garret (Jeff Bridges) when Carlton’s mother becomes sick. Knowing his charming yet painfully immature dad’s likelihood to disappoint, Carlton enlists his on-again-off-again girlfriend Lucy (Kate Mara) for emotional support. Once reunited, Carlton struggles to deal with the series of misadventures caused by his father’s antics, including missed flights, car trouble and bathroom brawls. Years of miscommunication, frustration and comically awkward attempts at bonding come to a head as the mismatched trio make their way from Ohio back home to Houston to reunite the family.

What the critics thought:

"A dreary dramedy of a road film that starts off ploddingly and proceeds to only grow more so as it crawls along."
- Michael Rechtshaffen, The Hollywood Reporter

"It's a low-key road movie that doesn't stray far from the very, very beaten path."
- Michael Ordona, Los Angeles Times

"The Open Road isn’t an unwatchable howler - instead, writer-director Michael Meredith’s film is merely dull and obvious."
- Tim Grierson, LA Weekly

The adult son of a baseball legend, together with his girlfriend, embark on a road trip with his estranged father.
