The Other End of the Line

2009-01-16 11:39

What it's about:

Priya Sethi (Shriya) indulges her infatuation with American culture by working at a call centre in Bangalore, India. Speaking in perfectly unaccented English, she tells her customers she is a native of San Francisco. Her conservative father Rajeev (Anupam Kher) is unhappy about this, and hopes her arranged marriage to the dull Vikram will be the solution. Priya calls the handsome and charming Granger Woodruff (Jesse Metcalfe) to help him with the fraudulent charges on his credit card. Priya and Granger have an instant connection over the phone. Unable to suppress the intrigue their chemistry offers, Priya agrees to meet Granger in San Francisco. She gets on a plane and crosses not only an ocean, but entire cultures as well.

What the critics thought:

"At a time when our [the US's] global standing is sinking like a stone, it’s comforting to know that, at least on the big screen, we can still land the babes no matter how obnoxious we are."
- Tim Grierson, L.A. Weekly

"The movie is like a glass of Sprite that has been left on the counter too long: transparent, sweet and flat."
- Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail

"The Other End of the Line ends up being a five-minute ad for buyer's insurance instead of an interminable interracial, international, intercultural romantic comedy."
- Wesley Morris, Boston Globe

An employee at an Indian call centre travels to San Francisco to be with a guy she falls for over the phone.
