The Sorcerer's Apprentice

What it's about:

An innovative and epic comedy adventure about a sorcerer and his hapless apprentice who are swept into the center of an ancient conflict between good and evil. Balthazar Blake is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan, trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath. Balthazar can’t do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler, a seemingly average young guy who demonstrates hidden potential as Balthazar's reluctant protégé.

The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash-course in the art of magic, and, together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness. It will take all the courage Dave can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes the Sorcerer's apprentice.

What the critics thought:

"As Balthazar, Cage doesn’t disappoint. He's just manic enough to keep the character from becoming too predictable. More's the pity, then, that a pro like him has to cede so much screen time to his character's young protege."
- Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post

"While Molina and Cage supply a measure of well-compensated eccentricity, their labours ultimately serve to emphasize the grinding mediocrity of the enterprise."
- A.O. Scott, New York Times

"It's an OK, family-oriented comedy action blockbuster with jokes and special effects troweled on to bolster its not-terribly-fresh story of magic and mentoring."
- Walter V. Addiego, San Francisco Chronicle

It's the coolest job ever.
