War of the Worlds

Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a divorced dockworker and less-than-perfect father. Soon after his ex-wife (Miranda Otto) and her new husband drop off his teenage son Robbie (Justin Chatwin) and young daughter Rachel (Dakota Fanning) for a rare weekend visit, a strange and powerful lightning storm begins above his house.

Moments later, at an intersection near his house, Ray witnesses an extraordinary event. A towering three-legged war machine emerges from deep beneath the earth and, before anyone can react, incinerates everything in sight. An ordinary day has suddenly become the most extraordinary event of their lifetimes - the first strike in a catastrophic alien attack on Earth.

What the critics are saying:

"...astounds, alarms and grips you like a bear-trap. Psycho Steve is back. Hold on to your popcorn."
- Paul Arendt, BBCi Film

"Steven Spielberg's reasonably entertaining rendering of the 1898 H. G. Wells novel is an elemental story of predator and prey."
- A.O. Scott, New York Times

"War of the Worlds is a big, clunky movie containing some sensational sights but lacking the zest and joyous energy we expect from Steven Spielberg."
- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Steven Spielberg brings out the big special effects guns for this entertaining sci-fi action spectacular, but don't expect any real depth below that gorgeous glossy surface.

war of the worlds great start, poor finish. Old tired formula. Expected better

Ho-Hum A dissapointment. It started well but lacked the oomph and shine that went with the radio show. The theme was the tried, tested and boring: "everyday American finds bravery beyond all & saves the day". The voice over of Morgan Freeman is dull and simple by comparison to the voice of Richard Burton on the radio show. Defintely a pop corn movie with loud special effects which should be enjoyed if you have no expectations from reading the book or hearing the radio show.

War of the worlds I am a huge fan of Mr Spielbergs work but was a tad dissappointed with his lateST. Maybe I was expecting too much, maybe I was hoping for some music from the Jeff Wayne musical, I dont know. 10 FOR SPECIAL EFFECTS, 7 FOR ACTING,2 FOR THE END OF THE MOVIE.

Miss Movie really irritated me. Lots of special effects but no story, rate 5 for acting (especially Dakota Fanning - all she did was scream) and as for the ending - enough said. Batman Begins - would rather see this movie again than War of the Worlds

War of the Worlds Not so good and would have been worth seeing with the original Jeff Wayne music. Tom Cruise a big disappointment and did not have to reherse any lines - Rachael, Rachael etc etc. Rachael was screaming most of the time and very irritating. Good visual effects but the planatarium at Wits put on a better show Forest Gump

Sub-Standard Not much of the amazing action story that the previews promised, as the so-called war was really nothing but a see-sawing massacre. First the aliens were indestructable, then they were doomed, not very entertaining. Acting was low grade and there was more petrified screaming than all the dialogue together. The best actor was probably Morgan Freeman and the fact that he was the narrator shows just how bad the acting was. Apart from some visual stimulas and aliens that look remarkably similiar to those in Independance day, this movie is not worth seeing. Star Wars 3 or Mr and Mrs Smith
