What it's about:
Set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, this is a story of miracles, crossed destinies, and the age-old battle between good and evil.
One night in winter, Peter Lake, middle-aged Irish orphan, burglar and master mechanic, attempts to burgle a fortress-like mansion on the Upper West Side. Though he thinks the house is empty, the daughter of the household is home. Thus begins the love between Peter and Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay), a young girl who is dying.
What we thought:
There aren’t many fairy tales out there for adults and after watching the trailer I was intrigued by the story - and not only because the delectable Colin Farell stars in it! After opening internationally and receiving dismal reviews I was even more interested in seeing it.
Dubbed the adult fairy tale movie, Winter’s Tale has all the elements that we love about fairy tales, a beautiful maiden and an unlikely hero who have a tragic love story, magic and the fight between good and evil all set in a mystical New York.
It is refreshingly different to everything else currently on offer at the big screen. This is a beautiful movie; the cinematography, the music, the setting and the cast all come together to engulf you in the magical, fantasy world.
It’s really hard to describe the plot of this movie because there is such a lot happening. And at times it is a bit hard to follow the story which spans over a century. At the root it is a romance, but for me it was more a story about love and its power to save.
The relationship between Peter (Colin Farrell) and Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay) will melt many a heart. Farrell and Findlay have amazing chemistry on screen. The soulful stares, the heartfelt exchanges and the glorious all consuming stumble into love will make a hopeless romantic’s heart bleed. Farrell and Findlay are so convincing in their roles that you cannot help but be swept up in this love affair. It’s the type of love that can only be brought to life in the movies.
Russell Crowe plays the villain Pearly Soames. He’s is everything every fairy tale villain is made of. In him lurks something dark and early on you realise that he isn’t really all human. This is definitely a different type of role for him and he gives a believable performance.
The second part of the movie set in modern day New York is not as captivating as the first part. It does however hold a surprisingly clever twist involving a mother (Jennifer Connelly) and her ill daughter (Ripley Soho).
Ultimately for me this movie did live up to the fairy tale theme. I was transported into an escapist magical world. It won’t win awards and it probably will not strike the same chord in everyone but it does, if only for a couple of moments, make you believe that the impossible is possible; that good always wins, that love transcends time and that in a world filled with so much darkness and pain there is a miracle waiting to happen.
