WHAT IT'S ABOUT:
Daniel (Hendrick Cronje) holds a secret dream of becoming a writer. In the pursuit of excitement, he finds himself trapped in an illicit affair with the wife of a powerful businessman. Things take another dramatic turn when he falls in love with the same businessman’s daughter (Elani Dekker). After his mistakes are revealed, he abandons the life set out for him and meets Tom (Zane Meas), a simple fisherman who helps Daniel achieve his true potential in life.

We all come that point in our lives when we question the path that we have chosen for our lives. It’s a confusing space to be in, especially when your family’s hopes rest on you.
So do you follow the path you’re on or dare to change your direction and follow your dreams?
This is the heart of the story in the new local film, Liewe Lisa.
In a sense life imitates art as writer, director, and lead Hendrick Cronje along with the movie, birthed his own production company alongside his brother to bring this story to the big screen.
While initially inspired by the 1967 film The Graduate starring Dustin Hoffman, his own life experiences influenced the film and the themes, and Liewe Lisa turned out to be something very different than the initial inspiration, he tells Channel24 in an interview.
The plot isn’t really something new however, Cronje used fresh storytelling techniques like using the score and not dialogue in confrontational scenes.
This created great dramatic tension, as it leaves the viewer wondering what exactly was said.
In terms of cinematography the film is beautifully shot. It was filmed on location in Stellenbosch and Stompneusbaai/St.Helena Bay. The scenes along the West Coast are particularly captivating as our country’s natural beautiful is on full display.
When it comes to the acting Cronje and his love interest, Elani Dekker give believable performances. However, I did find it difficult to relate to their characters at times.
I was particularly intrigued by Zane Meas’ character and his story. It was refreshing to see him explore another type of character.
If you’re into artsy, independent films then this should definitely be on your watch list.
