What it's about:
Trying to reverse a family curse, brothers Jimmy and Clyde Logan set out to execute an elaborate robbery during the legendary Coca-Cola 600 race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina, USA.
What we thought:
Logan Lucky was received internationally with glowing reviews hailing it “quirky” and “tons of fun”. In fact director Steven Soderbergh actually ended his cinematic sabbatical to take on this heist flick starring Channing Tatum and a platinum blonde Daniel Craig.
With all of this in mind I was optimistic that this crime comedy would be something I’d enjoy, especially after Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, another heist flick, recently blew my socks off.
But alas I just couldn’t get into the groove of this Southern style take on an Ocean’s Eleven-ish type story.
For me something was missing. The tempo was really slow, like there was a beat missing and it lacked some serious edge. Perhaps I was a bit spoiled by the up-tempo rhythm of Baby Driver and its fast paced storyline even though the two films are worlds apart.
Logan Lucky is a bit like bubble gum that starts out sweet but loses its taste if you chew on it for too long. Halfway through I was ready to spit it out.
Sadly not even the star-studded cast, which includes a last minute appearance by Hilary Swank, could get this engine going. Kudos however, has to go to Adam Driver’s standout performance as the one-armed Clyde Logan. His dry and lowkey take on the character made for some comical moments.
Whilst the big stars like Tatum and Craig deliver solid performances they just couldn’t light the firecracker underneath this flick that lacked big time on the suspense side of things.
Logan Lucky is totally watchable and really not a flop at all, but I don’t get what all the hype was about. It’s one of those flicks I forgot I watched about an hour later.
