My Little Pony

What it's about:

A new dark force threatens Ponyville, and the Mane 6—Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy, and Rarity—embark on an unforgettable journey beyond Equestria where they meet new friends and exciting challenges on a quest to use the magic of friendship and save their home.

What we thought:

Upon hearing that there was a My Little Pony movie being released, I instantly thought back to the days when I was 12 and used to play with the colourful plastic ponies with my younger cousin.

After watching the movie those memories are more vivid than ever, in a good way.

For adults, and even young adults, that’s what My Little Pony is about – nostalgia. Remembering the days when life was just sunshine and rainbows and the main concern was which pony I was going to be.

For kids, especially those between the ages of 4 and 7, My Little Pony ticks all the right boxes. It’s action packed, but in a way that is not too violent for little ones, it’s entertaining and adventurous, it’s got great songs the kids will be singing long after the movie is finished and, of course, it has an important lesson about friendship that everyone, actually, can take away.

In terms of the visuals and animation itself, it delivered. Looking at the original animated series, the essence of the different characters and diverse personalities plays out really well onscreen, especially since Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie are voiced by the same person, as well as Apple Jack and Rainbow Dash.

Some well-known faces lent their voices to some of the characters – Uzo Aduba, Emily Blunt, Zoe Saldana and Taye Diggs to name a few – but it didn’t make a difference.

Having famous voices didn’t add much to the film, nor did it take anything away. In fact the only famous voice I knew and could immediately identify was singer Sia, and that’s only because her character (Songbird Serenade) was a pony with her iconic black and blonde hair combination.

All in all, My Little Pony proves is an entertaining adventure for the kids and a nostalgic trip down memory lane for adults.
