WHAT IT'S ABOUT:

When Gnomeo and Juliet first arrive in London with their friends and family, their biggest concern is getting their new garden ready for spring. However, they soon discover that someone is kidnapping garden gnomes all over the city.

When Gnomeo and Juliet return home to find that everyone in their garden is missing, there’s only one gnome to call—Sherlock Gnomes. The famous detective and sworn protector of London’s garden gnomes arrives with his sidekick Watson to investigate the case. The mystery will lead our gnomes on a rollicking adventure where they will meet all new ornaments and explore an undiscovered side of the city.

WHAT WE THOUGHT:

Initially, I was not keen to go watch this movie. Mainly because it’s a sequel and I really don’t feel as though b-grade animations such as the first Gnomeo and Juliet deserve more invested time and money.

My opinion however, was quickly changed when seeing and hearing reactions of the young audience in the cinema.

With big names cast as the voices of tiny garden gnomes and other weird and wonderful characters in Sherlock Gnomes, it’s clear that this Paramount film franchise is a favourite for kids and, from what I noticed, adults don’t mind it either because - aside from recognising famous voices like Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt, Mary J. Blige and Chiwetel Ejiofor - the characters are all based on adult stories that all the parents know.

I mean, don’t expect massive fireworks or any Oscar worthy moments but this flick is definitely filled with fun, adventure and lessons about caring for those you love and will spark imaginative thinking in both children and adults alike.

Put it this way, if you have garden gnomes in your yard you’ll definitely wonder if they really do come alive when you’re not looking.

James McAvoy and Blunt reprise their roles as Gnomeo and Juliet and while they are just fictional characters, the ups and downs of their relationship are definitely relatable – especially for new couples.

Depp as Sherlock Gnomes and Ejiofor as his trusty sidekick Watson did a great job at making the characters adults have come to know and love kid friendly.

Also, a special shout out goes to the rest of the cast who, while they may not have had a lot of screen time, are needed to makes this worth watching, for kids at least.

It’s nothing to write home about and was probably not necessary, but Sherlock Gnomes will definitely entertain the kids.
