What it’s about:
Eloise, who just got dumped and excluded from the bridal party, decides to attend her good friend’s wedding anyway, only to find herself seated with five fellow unwanted guests at a forgotten table.
What we thought of it:
I think that this movie doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. It’s a somewhat silly comedy about love in all of its different forms. So I can’t understand why so many critics have panned it outright. I think it is funny, typical of its genre and has a great lead in Anna Kendrick who plays Eloise.
That’s not to say I don’t understand the somewhat warranted criticism about its predictability. You shouldn’t go expecting to see a genre bending flick that is destined for Oscar glory. It’s the kind of movie that would not be out of place on a family movie channel. It’s the kind of movie that you go and watch on a date where you can both laugh and feel warm and fuzzy about love. There are kisses and couples getting back together after a little bit of up and down.
The movie also boasts the twin acting powers of Craig Robinson and Lisa Kudrow (as the Kepps) who give the film a lot of its heart. The pair play a married couple who have fallen out of love and seem to hate each other.
Wyatt Russell plays Teddy (who is the ex-boyfriend of Anna Kendrick’s lead character Eloise); the Everybody Wants Some!! actor reminds me of Owen Wilson - in pretty much every movie he has been in – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
If maybe you are looking for a movie that is in the same genre (of a rom-com with a bridal theme) but perhaps got more right in terms of a fresh script and a lot more of a bittersweet ending then maybe check out the film classic My Best Friend’s Wedding. And then there’s always the more modern classic, Bridesmaids.
My favourite thing about this movie was its overall message about love that things might not always be perfect but they don’t have to be; because sometimes life is messy and people make mistakes. The most important thing is that you keep not only showing up but that you try and understand that the other person is flawed just like you.
I would say you should go watch this movie if you want to watch something light and easy to process. It’s no masterpiece but it does have some funny moments.
