To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You

WHERE TO WATCH:

Netflix

OUR RATING:

3/5 Stars

WHAT IT'S ABOUT:

It’s a new year and Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter (Noah Centineo) are no longer pretending to be a couple. They are a couple. And, as Lara Jean navigates a trove of official firsts with Peter — her first real kiss, her first real date, her first Valentine’s Day — she finds herself leaning more on Kitty and Margot (Anna Cathcart and Janel Parrish), Chris (Madeleine Arthur), and an unexpected new confidant, Stormy (Holland Taylor), to help her manage the complex emotions that come with this new chapter of balancing a relationship and figuring out her authentic self. But when John Ambrose (Jordan Fisher), another recipient of one of Lara Jean’s old love letters, enters her life again she must rely on herself more than ever as she’s confronted with her first real dilemma: Can she love two boys at the same time?

WHAT WE THOUGHT:

Dear Lara Jean,

From the moment I met you in To All the Boys I've Loved Before I knew we could be friends.

We have the same interests: we both like romance novels and the 80s teen classic movies.

I wanted to get to know you a bit more so after watching the first movie I went to get all the books.

And with each page, I read I fell more in like with you.

Wow.

Wait

What am I doing? This is supposed to be a review!

Being a big fan of the first movie and thereafter the books I was so excited for the sequel.

The trailer teased the biggest team face off since Twilight. Will she choose Peter or John Ambrose? The writing was pretty much on the wall with this one.

I badly wanted the sequel to be perfect.

What made To All the Boys I've Loved Before such a hit with me was that it was something fresh and unpretentious. It set the bar high this time around, though it lacked that magic of the first film.

The first part of the movie didn't have the natural feel of its predecessor.

Lana and Noah still have unbelievable chemistry, but it does feel very much like acting.

The second half of the movie did have something special. There are lots of memable cute moments that somewhat save the film a bit for me.

What I did enjoy about the characters this time around is that they were more relatable as teenagers and not so put together.

And everyone can relate to LJ's insecurities in her relationship.

The course of true love never does run smooth and the challenges they face as individuals and a couple show growth in the characters.

Jordan Fischer is a wonderful addition to the cast. And even though I knew how it would end, there were moments I was rooting for him.

Another must mention is Holland Taylor, who plays Stormy one of the residents at the retirement home where Lara volunteers. I do feel she was underused. Nevertheless, she was a delight to watch when she was on screen.

It's heart-warming and just what you expect from a high school romantic comedy. There is nothing ground-breaking when it comes to the genre, and it is unfortunately overshadowed by the first movie.

To All the Boys: PS I Still Love You is a movie for the fans, who I have no doubt will make this another most-watched film on Netflix.
