Cape Town - Critics are raving about the South African productions of the international hit musical, Evita.

City Press’ Gayle Edmunds labelled it as "spectacular" and a "triumphant" during its run on the Teatro stage at Montecasino in Johannesburg last month.

Now the musical, with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is wooing the crowds in Cape Town where it will be running until 7 January at Artscape

With 20 major awards to its credit, and an Oscar winning film version starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas, it is known as an iconic masterpiece the world over.

The South African production stars the brilliant Jonathan Roxmouth, as Che Guevara, and the UK’s Emma Kingston in the titular role. "Experiencing the combined vocal power of Roxmouth and Kingston is something you really don’t want to miss if you are a committed musical theatre fan. It is absolutely astounding," Edmunds wrote.

Channel24 photographer, Nardus Engelbrecht was given access to go behind the curtain at the Teatro to capture some never-before-seen moments. The result is a beautiful photo essay that will make you fall even more in love with this classic showpiece.
