Ek Vir Jou is in Afrikaans and it’s about love. An obvious chart recipe? Well, you will find all the elements that made 7 de Hemel a platinum success here. Armed with ornamental Afrikaans words, stories about love and his octave-leaping vocal signature Chris Chameleon is ready to cash in. Seven out of the twelve songs on the album are love ditties with swooning, slow melodies and pragtige poetic lyrics. The best love song is probably the title track. It’s a sure fire slow dance. Thankfully, the music is not all snails-pace, there are a few opgekikkerde liedjies, “Soen” and “Weer Bymekaar”. With its boeremusiek beat the latter will be a hit at a Sokkiedans. Although Chameleon has long forsaken his true Boo! colours, “Klein Klein Jakkalsies” and “Epiloog” are cool reminders of his charismatic mouth-trumpet chants.

If you are Afrikaans, on the wrong side of 20 and stay in the Karoo, then go and buy Ek Vir Jou as you’ll definitely get Chameleon’s drift. If you are linguistically-challenged and live in the CBD, then you probably won’t appreciate the mooi poetry of lullabies like “Klein Klein Jakkalsies” and are better off waiting for Chameleon to change colours and sing in English.

Rose, maanskyn en klein jakkalsies… Chris sing oor die liefde.
