Jordin Sparks – Battlefield

Jordin also knows where her strengths lie. Her sweet, youthful voice is perfectly suited to the catchy pop tunes on this album. In the same big breath, however, there's not much that differentiates this album from say Kelly Clarkson's All I Ever Wanted or Leona Lewis' Spirit. All great albums, but it's pretty interchangeable stuff. I'm not saying it's a bad thing – I'm just saying don't expect her to be breaking barriers yet. Besides, this is what she's really, really good at, so why shouldn’t she stick to it?

"Emergency (911)" was co-written by Sparks, and it's as fresh and fun as she is. It's got a little Rihanna flavour to it with less vicious and more delicious. "S.O.S" is the other up-tempo track and it proves she can nail the dance tracks as well as the ballads. But it's clear where her heart lies.

"The Cure" shows off her high notes as well as her understanding of dynamics. She eases between soft whispers and power-belting notes without losing control. The current radio single, "Battlefield" and "Walking on Snow" are also stand-out tracks. "Faith" starts out with a clean keyboard accompaniment, once again highlighting Jordin's incredibly loveable voice.

Simon Cowell told Oprah that AI season 6 (which Jordin won) was the weakest year in the competition so far. They also eliminated Jennifer Hudson, remember? Anyway, Jordin is so much more than an AI alum now. And we love her just the way she is.
