Mzansi House - Various - Playing house together, South African style

2006-03-29 18:29
Rather than narrow in on one aspect of the thriving local dance scene, this ambitious double disc actually tries to cover it all. Wot a lot we got: from street-smart kwaito tunes, to compulsive phuture funk excursions, kwaai township disko jives and sharp-sharp Afro-beat assaults.

So is this just another candy-coated compilation designed to cash in of the Christmas hype? Actually surprisingly not! Almost archival in its thoroughness, Mzansi House simply enlists everyone who is anyone: The House Afrika crew is out in force, Vinny da Vinci and Christos add their needle-sharp touch, while Revolution tune into the beats from the Jozi streets with their kwaito crossover vibes. Brothers of Peace bring double doses of Afro-velocity and DJ Mbuso and the disco-edged DJ Pepsi flash their new school skills. Heck, even Radio 5's in-house beat boy, Roger Goode gets an airing!

Equally at home on a boom box, your car stereo or a massive club sound system, Mzansi House manages to cover the local dance scene without missing a beat or losing its edge.

- Myles Keylock

With Afro-house having long replaced kwaito as the party music of choice for most of South Africa's disaffected post-apartheid youth, Mzansi House is a perfectly timed festive season compilation that collects South Africa's most ingenious indigenous dance music exponents in one tight, seamless package.
