Ntsiki Mazwai - MaMiya

This spoken wordsmith has been around the Jozi spoken word scene for a while. Anyone who followed her journey from the Feel a Sista days - a poetry collective that included renowned poet and TV presenter Lebo Mashile - should be quite familiar with some of these tracks.

Except this time the words are laced with vibrant beats from mid-tempo house and hip-hop to jazzy and sunny laid back guitar grooves - all delivered Mzansi floetry style. Familiar pieces include the poignant “Some fathers of these days”, the sunny “African Skies” and the ghetto fabulous “Love in Soweto”.

Good news is this is not just a regurgitation of her well-known poems spiced up with banging beats. MaMiya includes fresh kick ass tracks like “Ka Nci Nci Mos” which features Morafe’s Khuli, a banging hip-hop beat with hints of dancehall. Another interesting revelation is a cameo from Mazwai’s younger sister, Nomsa Mazwai on the addictive “Sweet Poison”. Nomsa is just as vocally gifted as her older sister Thandiswa. The Mazwai sisters are clearly a force to be reckoned with. Hopefully Ntsiki’s working on funky fresh material for her next offering.

MaMiya is the much-anticipated debut from spoken word sister Ntsiki Mazwai. You might remember her spoken word house hit “Urongo” featured on DJ Fresh’s Definition of House Vol.2 back in 2005. While Ntsiki Mazwai may be Amandla sister Thandiswa’s younger sibling, the similarities end right there.
