Omarion - 21

This time round, Omarion has remained one of the executive producers and also co-wrote most of the tracks. The former frontman for R&B boy band B2K named his sophomore album 21, after his age at the time he recorded it.

The album kicks off with the first single to be released, "Entourage". Listening to the first few beats one wonders if 21 is yet another You Got Served soundtrack. Lyrically, it's the stuff that teenage girls' dreams are made of, with Omarion crooning: "Though you may end up bein' my only gurl/Cause when ur with me ur my whole world... I like what we've got happening/And I don't want nothing comin in between both me and you/I'll let you be lieutenant if u let me be captain..." But once you listen to the rest of the album, you’ll see that it has much more substance.

The Neptunes are once again included in the production credits, with Pharrell lending his songwriting and vocal talents on "Obsession", a track solely based on snare drum riffs and synthesizer sequencers.

Other producers also returning to the studio with Omarion are The Underdogs R&B duo Harvey Mason Jnr and Damon Thomas, producing the slow jams "Midnight" and "Just That Sexy", as well as "Do It" with its laid-back rolling melodies. Smooth R&B is what one can expect from 21, but there's also a sense that tracks such as "Electric" and "Just Can't Let You Go" were penned with Omarion's music video choreographers in mind, giving the album a danceability rating.

Working with Omarion for the first time is monster hitmaker Timothy Mosley aka Timbaland. "Ice Box" was rumoured to have been written for Usher, but was eventually passed on to Omarion. Although Usher is featured on the official remix, the rumours are still very sketchy. On this track Omarion tries to come to terms with the infidelity of his girlfriend while working his way through the typical Timbaland hooks and syncopated rhythm. The second Timbaland track "Beg For It" incorporates Mosley's other great love, the sampler and kick hits, to produce a funky, hip hop beat.

Although 21 doesn't offer anything new in terms of the R&B genre, it's nevertheless worthy of a few good reviews by R&B fans worldwide.
