Somerfaan - Kyk Of Sy Kyk

At’s alter-ego Somerfaan must return: an Afrikaans electro-hop superhero primed to battle the bling, smash the backpacker consciousness sales pitches and genre surf through three decades of musical detritus. So he calls ex-Battery 9 buddies, Huyser and Paul into the studio. He slots Interster and Liewe Heksie onto the DVD. They take a few drags on the DP. And let the lo-fidelity mash-up of El-P, Gary Numan, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Third Eye Foundation and yes, Baltimora’s “Tarzan Boy" flow.... Into a phantasmagoria of bizarrely funky serenity prayer battle raps (“Wet ‘n Vibe”) that converse with Koos Doep’s demons (“Haaie Onder Ons”, “Wille Ganse”), and the ghosts lurking in Live Jimi Presley’s machine and Laibach’s military industrial complexes (“Plaas Toe”).

At Nel lies slumped on his sleeper couch. He’s depressed. How’s an Afrikaans electro-hop head going to keep it real in an age of pimped up beef raps and Billboard booty boasts? It’s worse. Waddy Jones has tagged Max Normal with a .TV. Critics are calling it a clever corporate hip-hop parody. They’re wrong. Salvation is at stake.
