The soundtrack features, Talib Kweli, Common, Cypress Hill, Gangstarr, 2pac and Naughty by Nature. It’s a hip-hop smorgasbord minus one exception: uber film soundtrack composer Mark Isham. Now don’t be scared hip hoppers, this classical musician takes nothing away from the street feel of the album, in fact his track “Riots” featuring has a raw street intensity, the intricate string arrangement and ambient sounds combined with’s flow make you feel like you’re right there in that moment. Even if you don’t dig classical music, you will feel something.

Back on the hip-hop tip once again it’s old school meets new school, but seriously on the one hand you’ve got ultra 90’s classic Montell Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It” and on the other the inspirational track “A Dream” by Common featuring which has been getting mega airplay. Even if you haven’t seen the movie, this album is worth checking out.

Most of us usually yawn when we head the word soundtrack because it usually means generic dreary tracks, basically an album full of fillers. But the soundtrack to the film Freedom Writers might just restore your faith in this lack-luster genre.
