Splash - Springbok

Okay one thing that’s good about the album is that he’s got a talented choir backing him In fact the CD would sound much better if it was just the choir singing a cappella without that off-beat cheap keyboard lingering in the background. The choir’s harmonies are reminiscent of Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s vocals. Tunes like “Lefatshe” and “Sengikhulile” have a 80s bubblegum and disco sound and would have probably done well if it had come out during the Steve Kekana fame. Maybe he’s trying to re-live the 80s, who knows? This is the kind of afro-pop you can imagine your mother listening to 20 years ago.

They say never judge a book by its cover, but sometimes the effort put into a cover can tell you a lot about what to expect from a CD. Splash’s Springbok album cover looks like it was done two minutes before it went to print. The same goes for his music which sounds like something that was done in a rush.
