The Veils - Nux Vomica

The Veils have had their share of troubles with Andrews the only original member left standing. But hey, not all band break ups are a bitch - Nux Vomica is flowing with creative juices. “Calliope!” is a jovial track laced with giddy guitar rifts that are completely addictive… Arcade Fire addictive. “Advice for Young Mothers To Be” is deliciously melancholic, and full of absolutely terrible advice for any mother, of course.

“Jesus For the Jugular” stands out as Vomica's most eerie track, its slow, sloppy broken beat bringing to mind images of a 1920’s jazz club and dancing skeletons. This album is peculiar but wonderful: it’s pop-noir all the way. Only downside is that you probably couldn’t pick these guys out of any indie-rock lineup as they look like almost every other fashion band out there.

Pitched somewhere between suicide and bliss, and with front man Finn Andrews sounding like a hybrid of Jack White, Nick Cave and Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics, Nux Vomica should get any indie-head foaming at the mouth.
