A quickie with Flat Stanley

2007-05-11 11:30
Album launch details: 8.30 pm at Workshop 17, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town (Next to the Aquarium). Entrance, R100.

On how the band handle disagreements...

With mutual insults, hand gestures and then apologetic phone calls later. While our differences can lead to frustration sometimes, managing those differences makes us stronger.

On love...

One of the greatest songwriting tools. Love, whether you've just fallen into it or just fallen out of it always seems to inspire great songs.

On living the rock and roll lifestyle...

The Rock & Roll lifestyle has taken it's toll on the band over the last 2yrs (you'll find lyrical references in the new songs), so we're trying to chill out a bit more and focus on what it is we love doing which is play music. The rest of the scene is far less glamourous than it seems, especially for vocalists!

On the SA music scene...

I've just returned from spending a month in the US, spent some time with Ed Roland (Collective Soul) and I've come back more convinced than ever that SA bands have what it takes to make it Internationally. We just need to learn to be as professional as possible EVERY SINGLE gig and to stop whining about the state of the industry. Just get on with it! On using sexy girls to sell your first record...

That's not fair! At ONE festival we had some girls in bikini tops handing out frisbees & key rings with the band's website details. Good songs translated into the great sales we enjoyed.

The stupidist thing you've done...

Allowed the band to have a bar tab!

The worst gig you've played...

A show in Pretoria which we were meant to double bill with Cutting Jade, and then they just pulled a no show... it was messy!

Your favourite song on the new album, Between 2wo Worlds

Freedive or Stereo - They both sum up nicely where FS is at musically right now.

Spelling tests...

Are cool. More people should have to take them.

If you weren’t answering these questions, what would you be doing?

Sleeping. It's gonna be a BIG night tomorrow!

If you weren't musicians, what would you be?

A prize-winning karaeoke king! (spelling?)

If you weren't human, what animal or object would you be?

A sloth. Saw one in Mexico in February.. man what a life!

Andy from Flat Stanley (not the punk band from sat hunched in front of his computer dreaming up these answers on the eve of the launch of the group's new album, Between 2wo Worlds, released through cutting edge guys JustMusic on Friday 11 May 2007.
