Best of 2006

2006-12-28 15:38
We know (as you do) that it's impossible to listen to everything that comes out. What we hear depends on the record companies. Who's working here. What we all personally dig. And sometimes, pure chance. These are just the things we remember - we know everyone has their own favourites. So feel free to say what they are, but take it easy on the personal insults. It's just music, guys. Just music.

And the categories are... (winners added 28th December)

Song of the Year
Our winner: "Fokkol" by Koos Kombuis (because it did so well on our MP3 chart), with "Fokol" by Alaska a close second (big on radio / in clubs) and "Feel Good Inc." by Gorillaz very tempting too (because it's the best).

Album of the Year
Our winner: Bob Dylan for Modern Times
See who was nominated Music Video of the Year
Our winner: "Tell Me Baby" by RHCP, but it was a really tough call.

New artist of the year
Our winner: Lupe Fiasco for Food & Liquor. Hip-hop needs a mainstream hero and if he can ditch the interludes, he's ours.

Best SA act of the year (all-rounder)
Our winner: Vusi Mahlasela, because he's the only one whose fans' posts on the message boards haven't made us want to delete the internet this year. And because he's great, too. Just Jinjer also impressed us - but they live LA.

We also list...

Worst album of the year
Our winner: Foster & Allen Sing the Number 1's. Actually there's probably something worse out there, but this is advertised on TV and we just. can't. take. it. anymore.

and... Biggest Christmas cash-ins
Our winner: Kersfeestuis Vol 2 for obvious reasons. See who's nominated

The results are in! Much to the fury of music fans, we've done our own Music Awards, where we give the best artists of the year millions (possibly billions!) of freshly printed Zim dollars. *Actual prize amounts will vary even more than the current value of said currency. publishes all comments posted on articles provided that they adhere to our Comments Policy.
