Evan Dando: "I feel way prettier than I look"

2008-06-29 09:46

Channel24: They say every artist creates basically the same thing, over and over, worrying away at it. What’s the theme or central issue you just haven’t been able to let go of, over the years?
Evan Dando: So..that theory applies to all artists, not just The Ramones and AC/DC? I guess my main theme would have to be the exploration of the commonplace. The 'Slice of Life' thing if you catch my drift. I like to keep things 'vanilla' , as Hank Williams put it. I have a reverence for everyday existence and inanimate objects.

In your own / Lemonheads’ discography, which tracks do you feel have stood the test of time, and which… not so much?
From 'It's A Shame About Ray' to the present it's all cool- I'll stand behind that stuff (except Mrs Robinson). Before that I didn't know what I was doing.

If you could go back in time and not cover "Mrs Robinson", would you change the past?
Nope - at least Paul Simon hated it, we did something right.

When I looked you up online to check I was up to date, the following sponsored links kept popping up under stories about you:
“Teeth Whitening exposed”
“Mortgage rates drop – Fed at 2%”
“tired of taking the pill?”
That's called Junk Mail or spam or something. I haven't been to the dentist in years and I'm not a homeowner. Were you surprised to find you had fans in South Africa?
You know, we have always done great in the UK, and Ireland and ok in Holland. I figured people would've checked us out because of all the English press over the years. I am delighted to come and play there.

What have other musicians/performers you’ve spoken to said about South Africa?
Nothing, none of my friends have been.

What would you be without a sense of humour?

You’re playing solo acoustic sorts of sets in SA. What does taking a track acoustic to to the song?
I love it if the song is good it always works

And finally, supermodels often say they don’t think they’re all that hot. Do you feel as pretty as everyone else says you are?
I feel way prettier than I look
