Four Factor: Divine Divas

2007-09-18 09:51
This week’s four factors rated out of 10 are:

All-around entertainer factor : Sure, real divas have little trouble hitting those high notes, but can they jazz it up or do we hear the same saccharine love songs over and over again? Which diva is adaptable? And when they start acting are their films box office hits or Titanic disasters?

Head-start factor: Everyone has a unique story to tell about how they got to the top. Did our R&B divas become the legends because of their exceptional voices or were they bumped into superstardom by their better-half?

Prima Donna attitude factor: Who’s arrogant, difficult to work with, high maintenance and a drama queen? Who’s been demoted to a tabloid headline?

Fashion chic factor: A real diva is timelessly elegant and sophisticated. Who’s a seasonal fashion disaster?

Our four divas are:

Whitney Houston:

All-around entertainer factor: This six-time Grammy Award winner is a multifaceted artist. Renowned for her expansive vocals, she’s the only female artist to secure the No1 spot on Billboard Hot 100 on seven consecutive occasions! She’s done rhythmic grooves, soulful ballads and up-tempo tracks; she’s recorded the largest selling gospel album to date ( The Preacher’s Wife soundtrack), and she’s experimented with hip-hop and R&B in 1998’s “My Love is your Love”. Her exceptional talent is much admired by younger R&B singers such as Kelly Price and Faith Evans. Everyone wants to be her. Her success in the films The Bodyguard and Waiting to Exhale proves if singing doesn’t work out, there’s a place for her in showbiz. 10

Head-start factor: She was already a lead vocalist on the Michael Zager Band’s single “Life’s a Party” who offered her a recording contract at fourteen. When her mom said she should finish school first, she worked as a model appearing on Seventeen magazine covers. Doing modeling and singing concurrently, this sister worked her way up to her debut album. 10

Prima Donna attitude factor: You don’t get more diva than Whitney who’s infamous for her I-want-my-cappuccino-right-now attitude. Maybe if she wasn’t such a ‘crack head’ everyone would treat her like gold. Rumours of her drug and spousal abuse have ruined her image. Her biggest mistake was marrying that jail-loving former husband, Bobby Brown. Well done on leaving that washed up R&B bad boy, now please stay off drugs! 4

Fashion chic factor: Whitney has never shocked us when it comes to her clothes. Always dressed so elegantly, she is better known for her curly and sexy hairdos. 8

Mariah Carey:

All-around entertainer factor: Well-known for her high-pitched whistle vocals, Mariah was named the best-selling female artist of the millennium. She writes nearly all her tracks and also writes and produces for other artists. The mid-90s saw her blending in R&B, soul and hip-hop orientated sounds in her music. Emancipation of Mimi showcased more urban, party-like songs. While her extraordinary vocals have earned her much respect, her acting is disastrous. Despite going for acting lessons her Glitter movie was a box office failure and WiseGirls was so bad it went straight to TV! Word on the street has it she’s going to be in an upcoming movie with Adam Sandler. Sigh. 7

Head-start factor: Former husband Tommy Mottola who was a Columbia Records executive at the time, produced her debut album. Following her marriage to Mottola she produced a series of hit records. She definitely knew how to play her cards well. And then when her fame sky-rocketed, she left him. Poor guy. 5

Prima Donna attitude factor: Mariah is living it up! If she’s not showing off her fabulous self in sexy lingerie on magazine covers she’s designing sexy undies. The wannabe actress claims she needs more sleep than a newborn to sing the way she does, and she sleeps in a sauna. Apparently the steam relaxes her throat. This high-maintenance diva has changed men like underwear since her divorce: first it was Derek Jeter, then Luis Mugiel, then Eminem. Who’s next? 4

Fashion chic factor: Oooh Mimi. Whether its cut-off pants and tank tops or her homemade designer outfits when it comes to her closet, Mariah needs some serious guidance! She’s earned herself quite a reputation with those raunchy 1970’s porn star outfits which only she thinks are dazzling. Her nearly nude image picked up the pace following the release of her Emancipation of Mimi album which makes us wonder what exactly she’s getting emancipated from. 0

Diana Ross:

All-around entertainer factor: A songstress, song writer, and Academy Award nominated actress Diana Ross is without a doubt an all-around entertainer. Her music ranges from pop, R&B, disco, soul to jazz, and she has released a total of eighteen No1 hit singles. Diana rocked the 70s and 80s and has been listed as the most successful female artist of the 20th century by the Guinness Book of World Records. Unlike most actress wannabe singers who make going to the movies a misery, Diana, is a very talented actress. Apart from winning many awards for her singing, this 63-year-old has also been praised for her roles in films such as Lady Sings the Blues and Mohagony . 10

Head-start factor: Diana began her singing career in her teens with her neighborhood friends as a doo-wop quartet. The group was later named The Supremes where she led on all but one of the group’s singles. But the singles weren’t successful until the founder of Motown, Gordy (who was to be her husband later) made her the official lead singer, and soon after she began her solo career. 5

Prima Donna attitude factor: It’s no secret that Diana is a difficult and demanding boss. Apparently the diva uses her daughter to spy on staff firing them if reported as misbehaving. The Motown queen has been accused of blacklisting former assistants she had fired. When it comes to her family life and marriage, the tabloids have a field day. This soul sensation has five children with three different partners, one of them, Motown label boss Berry Gordy! 4

Fashion chic factor: Like a true Diva, fashion is one thing she knows best. She dresses elegantly. She designed the clothes for her role in the Mohagony movie and she’s planning on launching her own clothes label. Now that’s something to look forward to. Bring it on, girl! She’s also a spokesperson for an up market make-up brand Mac Cosmetics. 10

Celine Dion:

All-around entertainer factor: Best known for her Titanic song “My Heart Will Go On” and her powerful vocals, Dion’s music ranges from pop and rock to gospel and classical. Falling Into You (1996) was a big hit in many countries and it became one of the best-selling albums of all time. Celine released over twenty-five albums during the 1980s and 1990s and has sold over 100 million albums worldwide! Though she was very popular in the 90s she hasn’t released any hits since, but who knows maybe her latest album will reach No1 spot. Surprisingly she’s been rated as the best selling artist in Mzansi. Wonder why. 7

Head-start factor: Born to an impoverished family of fourteen children, meeting her manager and future husband René Angélil must have felt like she won the lottery! Angélil mortgaged his house to fund her first record, sent her to school to polish her English, and she even underwent a physical makeover! 5

Prima Donna attitude factor: Apart from the pay-for-play scandal where her record company was reported as bribing radio stations to boost her popularity before Ceasars Palace 2003 debut, Celine has really mastered the art of keeping her private life out of the media. In a world where celebrities have stooped to airing their dirty laundry just so their names can stay in the paper, this is very rare. Instead she has dedicated her time to charity causes. Well done. 7

Fashion chic factor: Celine Dion with her slightly off-key garments has been labeled a fashion disaster. It seems that singing is the only thing that she has. 3

Scores (out of 40):

Mariah Carey - 16
