High School Musical: CT Auditions - Chasing fame

2008-06-18 08:52
A legion of aspirant actors and singers turned up at the River Club in Observatory, Cape Town on Friday for a once in a lifetime opportunity – to play the leads in the first ever High School Musical theater show.

M-Net are running auditions to find the perfect pair to play Troy and Gabriella, the talent search will form part of a reality show called High School Musical: Spotlight South Africa, which will air in August. At the end of the show winners will go on to play the roles of Gabriella and Troy in the High School Musical stage production to be produced by renowned theatre impresario Pieter Toerien and industry veteran Hazel Feldman.

"I'm totally gonna fail my maths exam on Tuesday" one 17-year-old girl exclaimed when she received a callback from producers. Thousands were whittled down to 70, and were asked to return on Saturday where they were put through their paces with dance and singing lessons from seasoned professionals. On Sunday they performed in front of judges, and the 70 became seven, that's right, only seven from Cape Town are going forward to the top 40 to compete for the lead roles against other hopefuls from around the country.

It was a grueling audition which resulted in many dashed dreams - "I'm not giving up" said 16-year-old Mjon Van Blommestein, "this was a good experience".

Choreographer Lorcia Cooper who is on the show's Creative Panel gave some advice to the group on the last leg of auditions, "this is yours for the taking, no playing around, bring your best". The Creative Panel will be guiding and assessing participants throughout the series and include theatre director Paul Warwick Griffin and musical director Charl-Johan Lingenfelder.

So, do you think you have what it takes? The next auditions will be held in Johannesburg on Thursday 19 June and Friday 20 June at The Wanderers Stadium, Illovo. And thereafter auditions will move to Durban on Friday 27 June at the BAT Centre, Victoria Embankment.

The stage production of High School Musical will premiere in Cape Town at the Artscape Opera House on 26 November 2008 and will move to Montecasino’s Il Teatro in Johannesburg in February 2009.
