So we're in a studio surrounded by tons of talent. It's weird because everyone looks all normal, until they start doing their thing. No mics are on yet, but songwriter Ryan Dalton is so excited he's playing air drums on his knees and looks like he's about to jump out of his chair. He grabs his guitar and starts strumming a tune. "Do you know this country song?" he asks, teasing Frieda Davel, who's there to record the vocals of his song with Zolani Mahola from Freshlyground.

Ryan plays "Doo Bee Doo Bee Doo Bee Doo Wah Deh", singing in a classic Southern lilted accent. Everybody's laughing.

Okay, it's time for the real work to begin. Frieda and Zolani lay down the first take of the chorus. It's so good, Frieda says "I don't want to go home. Can we stay here?" In the control room Sifiso is dancing around to the girls' vocals. It's one thing to hear someone on a mastered CD, but when you hear them up close, right in front of you, it's almost unbelievable how good they are. Frieda and Zolani create perfect harmonies with their voices. It's all a perfect harmony really. This whole thing.

The recording of the MylifE Project's song, "It's My Life" involved many SA musos including Josh and Zolani from Freshlyground, charting pop singer-songwriter James Stewart, top drummer Barry van Zyl, American songwriter, social worker and activist Ryan 'Brown' Dalton and MylifE stars Frieda Davel and Sifiso Jezile.

Frieda and Sifiso used to live on the streets for many years before joining the MylifE project which aims to empower kids living on the street with skills and job opportunities. Frieda entered Coca-Cola Pop Stars in 2002 and has gone on to record a single entitled "Heart of Care". Sifiso is one of the founders of the organisation and has studied sound engineering and film which he uses to help other kids in the project.

But there's no charity or pity here. It's more of an exercise in will power; if you want to get out, you will. But it's your struggle. Just take a look at the lyrics to It's My Life:

And only I can feel the pain
And it's my heart that takes the strain
Though I'll walk right next to you
I know I gotta walk it through

When these struggles pass me by
Maybe then you won't ask why
I had to walk this road alone

'Cause I had to do it on my own

Remember these words. Linzi Thomas from MylifE says that once this track is released, kids will be singing it in the streets. Ryan Dalton wrote the song and gave it to the project in 2002. After much hard work, it's ready to be heard. And the world is ready to hear it.

Here's a taster of this inspirational song.

Take some stars, the streets and some soul, put it all in a studio and watch magic in the making.
