Running With Scissors

Massive tin barrels are ablaze with flames outside, and the buzz is already alight. The dregs of the afternoon wedding ceremony walk drunk on Brandy and head home. I can imagine a wedding ceremony at Trotters in Boksburg will, if anything, be a memorable one. Little boys in tiny ties loiter on the cement floor. The bride finishes off her Klippies and coke and wipes away smudges from her eyes.

Dressed in white gown, Nancy Hillary of Authentic Ideas hurls abuse at the wedding party and tells them to go home. The two support acts on the bill tonight are the exorcist sounding Downward Spiral and We Shall Embrace. If you're a hippie, and you read twirly books like The Secret - then I guess it is hard to imagine anything good can come from a name like Downward Spiral. Maybe they believe in the theory of opposites, instead.
The girls are looking hot tonight - in winter PJs and slippers. "I sleep naked" - barks lead singer Caroline Hillary – "so I had to go and buy new Pajamas". The floor is scattered with white pillows bearing the RWS name. Pillow Fight time. As the girls hit stage - the night begins with the amazing acoustic "Butterflies".This is the first time I've seen them play anything remotely acoustic, and it kicks. Every band needs a ballad, even a punk band wearing pajamas.

And then it's full head bang into the rest of the set. I’m standing in front taking photos, but can feel the lunge of the head heavy crowd bashing into my back every second. It hurts. RWS fans are made up of an assortment of boy girls and girlie boys. All who love to knock back the straights, and end up on the floor.

Pillows are ripped open and insides lie like intestines all over the club. RWS are a punk band, and yet there is nothing "hardcore" about them. The lyrics hinge in the dark and probe quite a bit, but when it comes to a live gig from RWS, the atmosphere is all fun, fun, fun. Energetic, chaotic and cathartic, the gig tonight is tight.

When I wake up in the morning my hair smells like a Boksburg braai, and I can't see straight. Well done, RWS, for putting on a party sure to be remembered for many weeks to come.

I've been out every single evening for the past four nights, and my kidneys feel like Chuck Norris' knuckles, but there is no way I can think of couching it tonight. All girl punk rock band Running With Scissors are launching their sophomore album Vertical Sleep State in a dodgy little pub called Trotters, in Boksburg. Apt, I reckon, if you want to get the full effect of what punk is meant to stand for, and live the grunge. It's a pajama party, and as I manipulate the Eastern roads I reme publishes all comments posted on articles provided that they adhere to our Comments Policy.
