SA's Best Band Sites

2008-06-03 10:39
That’s why we’ve searched far and wide for the best band websites in South Africa. Who knows what they’re doing, and who doesn’t? While there are a number of pretty sites out there, many of them just can’t cope with the burden of actually finishing what they started, or updating their tour schedules. Tisk tisk. Those that have shall be rewarded.

Here are our five fave South African music websites:

The Parlotones
Small but sturdy, The Parlotones have one thing all the others don’t. Their very own online game! If you have a PC-friendly microphone, you can race against a sprinting robot by shouting your own runner to victory. A fun little waste of time.
features: wallpapers, music videos, music player, game!

The Rolls Royce of band web sites. Regular news updates, a ton of downloads & pics as well as forums where you can talk to the band. The design is pretty, and distinctly African.
features: gallery, wallpapers, music player, music & event videos, screen saver download, forum, downloadable posters, events calendar

Dozi’s site doesn’t pretend to be a library of information, but what it does contain is presented well with nifty animations. Also has a refreshingly earnest Q&A which will answer those two burning questions: what is Dozi’s favourite meal (pap en wors) and where is ideal holiday spot (Hartenbos)?
features: music player, gallery, lyrics

Harris Tweed
This is the Sleeping Beauty of the bunch. There are bands that might actually kill (or dispense sleeping curses) to have such a gorgeous website. Look out for the subtle but wonderful animations.
features: music player, lyrics, album artwork, wallpapers, icons for windows & mac, events calendar

Stealing Love Jones

Well animated site that performs flawlessly. Also the only site to offer a free song download.features: music player, awesome live pics, wallpapers, song download, music videos, events calendar

Honourable mentions (& why they didn’t make it)

Gang of Instrumentals

The sexiest urban design we’ve seen so far. Music vids, wallpapers and all the regular features.
Why they didn’t make it: update your news and gigs sections guys! It’s 2008 m’kay?

Fire Through The Window

Looks and feels like a treasured personal scrapbook. Great design and colour scheme.
Why they didn’t make it: For the thousandth time: don’t have a gigs section if you won’t update it!

Every band needs a website. Read that again, band managers: website. Sure, having a Myspace page that isn’t as ugly as the inside of a mass murderer is something to be proud of. But a live website is still the high-mark of professionalism in the digital music age. publishes all comments posted on articles provided that they adhere to our Comments Policy.
