The Mercury moment we’ve been waiting for
The shortlist for the nominations of the Mercury Music Prize was announced this morning. Apparently, there is a certain X factor needed to make the grade. This year it’s the singer/songwriter factor.

“Above all, this year’s shortlist for the Nationwide Mercury prize is about the art of the songwriter,” explained Simon Frith, chair of the judges. He added this profound statement: “If you want to know what life is like in Britain today, listen to the country’s musicians!”

Painfully obvious remark aside, the nominees are:
Arctic Monkeys – “Whatever People Say I am That’s What I’m Not”
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan – “Ballad of the Broken Seas”
Editors – “The Back Room”
Guillemots – “Through the Windowpane”
Richard Hawley – “Cole’s Corner”
Hot Chip – “The Warning”
Muse – “Black Holes and Revelations”
Zoe Rahman – “Melting Pot”
Lou Rhodes – “Beloved One”
Scritti Politti – “White Bread Black Beer”
Sway – “This is my Demo”
Thom Yorke – “The Eraser”

Watch out UK, Chomee's coming
Sexy singer and dancer Chomee, is reportedly taking her breast, er... best act to the UK. Yep, Chomee will be shooting her next video in and around famous London landmarks such as Trafalgar Square, Chelsea, Big Ben and Piccadilly Circus. The man behind the booty babe (or should that be on top?), manager and producer Arthur Mafokate reportedly says they are taking Chomee's music to another level. Beyond the booty? We’ll have to wait and see...

Arctic Monkeys are moving to London
The Arctic Monkeys are planning to quit small town Sheffield for London. The British indie-rock poster boys, who all grew up in the Yorkshire city, may be forced to move to the UK capital because they spend so much time there working.

Front man Alex Turner told Britain's The Sun newspaper, "We haven't spent a great deal of time in Sheffield lately and maybe after this year we might want to go somewhere else. Staying in Sheffield is not a deliberate anti-London thing. We're not afraid of living there, but it will be a real hassle not having our mothers around to do our washing though."

The 21-year-old rocker is also worried that as Sheffield is his musical inspiration, his song writing might be affected by the move. He said, "I tried to write some stuff the other day in a hotel room and it was just rubbish. So maybe I just need to be back in my bedroom at home in Sheffield." Ag, shame.

DJ Glen Lewis' maintenance battle
When downtempo house mixmaster and Metro fm DJ Glen Lewis was listening to his co-hosts talk about nannies this week, he obviously had no clue what they were on about. Turns out, Glen is embroiled in a maintenance dispute with his ex and mother of his teenage boys, aged 17 and 19. Sunday newspaper City Press reports that the mother of the boys wants Glen to pay for their education, in addition to the monthly R1 500 per child. Glen’s saying ‘hell no’! Come on Glen - you are one of the highest paid DJs at Metro, help the sista out. Missy Elliot’s house gets trashed
Missy Elliot is furious with her backing dancers for trashing her house. The feisty femme-rapper recently invited the dancers to stay with her and work on new material. Turns out they went "ballistic" and abused her hospitality.

Missy told GQ magazine, "I have a couple of my dancers staying at my house - they're with me because I'm starting on my album, just to get a vibe. But they've got cups in the sink, underwear on the floor. My house started to look like a trash can. They were dirty dancers - that's the perfect word for it. I told them to clean up but they didn't do nothing but push it in the corner. So I just went ballistic."

Diddy Kim no more
First there were rumours, and then he denied it. Now the latest tabloid wires report Diddy and on-off long-time girlfriend Kim Porter have actually called it quits. Reports say the former model and mother to Diddy's twins and son has moved out of their luxury apartment. It's about time the girl woke up, but will it last?

Snoop Dogg gets own reality TV series
US rapper Snoop (AKA Calvin Broadus Jr) will be pimping it up at his pad and at work for a series of half hour shows on E! Entertainment Television, scheduled to be shown towards the end of this year.

Ted Harbert, whose Comcast Entertainment Group operates the E! Channel, said, "It will be hilarious and heart-warming. The juggling acts that Snoop faces day-in, day-out between career and family is certain to resonate with our viewers. Snoop is, without a doubt, one of the most charismatic and intriguing personalities in pop culture today. While he has captured a legion of fans as the king of hip-hop, what makes Snoop most interesting is the side of him that most people have never seen."

The hip-hop star will be seen at his Los Angeles home with his three children and will also be filmed carrying out community work including helping to run the youth American football league he founded.

Britney applies to be a waitress
Britney Spears has applied to be a cocktail waitress at a Hollywood bar. The "toxic" pop singer was drinking at hip hangout Les Deux with friends when she approached a manager and told him she wanted to wear a "sexy" corset and serve drinks.

The manager asked Britney to fill out an application form, before interviewing her for a job. A source told Life and Style Weekly magazine, "Britney told one of the managers, ‘I really want to get a job here - I love the sexy red corsets the cocktail waitresses wear!’ and he said 'Well, you should fill out an application then!' She filled out the application, including her work history, address, social security number, and then she went to a back room for an interview with the manager. Everyone thought she was joking, but she seemed dead serious."

Crikey, Brit as a cocktail bunny? Now that’s a career makeover worth waiting for!
