DJ Sbu’s need for Speed
What was DJ Sbu thinking going at 257km/h in an Audi TT on the N1 last week where the speed limit is a comfy 120km/h? We have a few ideas. Maybe he was thinking: “How can I increase the sales of my album, mmm… get arrested, that’s how!” After all, his “mistake” has only cost the record exec a measly R7 000. He obviously was not rushing to a show, because…hey, we know he is often late for those! When Audi found out that the Ukhozi fm spokesman for a campaign aimed at fostering responsible behaviour had broken the sound barrier they took back the TT they’d loaned him for publicity purposes a mere month ago. Good for Audi! This is not the first time DJ Sbu has graced our column, read here.

Idols schoolgirl returns home
Idols winner Jody was ecstatic about returning home after being away for four months. The 17-year-old – who happens to be the youngest Idols winner ever - won a Citroen C2, a SonyBMG record company contract and R100 000 in cash. Not too shabby for a teenager who cut short her schooling to compete. Reports from her dad say she will be finishing her studies in 2009. However, during an interview with 24.com, she told us she had been push through grade eleven. Sounds like a high school drop-out to us. See the interview here and watch the finale here

Don’t ask me about Dad!
Bongi Dube is sick and tired of people asking her about how she fells since her father Lucky Dube passed away. She wants to morn her father in private, and asking her about it is depressing. The house singer, who recently released her debut CD Ngifuna Wena, hopes to follow in her father’s footsteps with a successful music career. With her new release hitting gold status recently, she is well on her way.

Hip hop “Umshini”
There is no escaping new ANC president JZ or his anthem “Umshini wami”. It has been revived as a hip-hop song by Jozi-based Zimbabwean See4. He reportedly told a Sunday paper, “My 'Umshini Wam' ' is referring to a microphone, not a machine gun. I don’t want to politicise the whole thing.” Ja, okay. And maybe JZ is referring to his…

Rihanna postpones shows
Talk about being unprofessional! R&B ‘Good girl gone bad’, Rihanna recently postponed three UK concerts. The pop star was advised by doctors not to go ahead with the shows, but the real reason for the doctor's orders are yet to be confirmed. A statement released by the Birmingham NEC simply read: "As per Rihanna's doctor's instructions, Rihanna will be unable to perform. Rihanna plans to reschedule this date as soon as possible. "She appreciates the love and support of all her fans and wants nothing more than to see and connect with them. We apologise for any inconvenience." The 19-year-old had already missed a concert at Nottingham Arena and has also postponed her planned performance at Bournemouth International Centre. Sounds like she has a serious case of Idontwannaworklitis! Read her CD review and watch her interview.

A Spears baby on the way
No, not Britney, but 16-year-old younger sister Jamie Lynn Spears. The pregnant teen told OK! magazine in an exclusive interview that she plans to keep the baby and raise it in a normal family environment in her home state of Louisiana. No word on whether 19-year-old baby daddy Casey Aldridge will be part of the normalcy. Mom Lynne Spears is reportedly in shock, but c’mon she raised both. Read more here

Lil Mama’s Momma Dies
New York Rapper and singer, best known for her hit “Lip gloss” (nominated for single of the year at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards), was performing in ATL when she received the news of her mother’s passing. She immediately returned to NYC to be with her family. Lil’ Mama’s mother has battled with cancer since 2003. Her mom was originally diagnoses with colon cancer, but after a relapse the cancer spread to the other parts of her body. The 18-year-old has spoken openly about her mother’s illness, and has it made her stronger and more focussed on her music career. Watch her talk about it in this interview. As we reported a few weeks ago another rapper, Kanye West, also lost his mom recently.
