Cape Town - Even though Lucy Kruger has been around since 2012, I only discovered her earlier this year through her music video for Winter and remember just being completely in awe afterwards, by the music and the video.
The video is a perfect description of her music; an extraordinary work of art with a certain type of magic and mystery to it. Something I don’t think I’ve ever experienced when it comes to our local artists. She describes her sound as something between Alternative Folk and Psychedelic Folk, which still doesn’t really do it justice.
I remember as a young boy my father introducing me to the music of Loreena McKennitt, a Canadian folk artist with Celtic and middle-eastern themes, and so far this is the only other artist Lucy’s sound has reminded me off. Not being able to describe an artist sound or genre, for me says a lot about the musician.
I saw Lucy perform live for the first time at Rocking The Daisies earlier this year and went to experience a more intimate show at Café Roux in town on Friday evening.
The show was like nothing I’ve experienced before. There was a flow of a mythical and mystical energy emanating from stage, filling up the room. I tried to capture some of it with my camera, but looking back afterwards realising it’s something that can only be fully experience in that moment at the show.
A personal highlight was when Lucy threw in a few Bob Dylan songs in the set list, and old Bob would have definitely been proud of this lady’s twist on his songs.
