Johannesburg – It was an amazing moment when international stars Beyoncé and Jay-Z first stepped onto the stage at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 on Sunday.

The FNB Stadium rumbled with cheers from thousands of fans when Bey and Jay first appeared hand-in-hand. The couple performed for two hours leaving fans buzzing from the high.

Here are five of the most memorable moments from their performance.

1. Taking it all in

When the stage doors split and fans first caught a glimpse of Beyoncé and Jay-Z holding hands as they stepped forward, a wave of commotion spread across the stadium. We spent the first few seconds of the show taking in the fact that Queen Bey was actually performing live on South African soil. The energy was electric and stayed that way for the entire two-hour set.

2. The Soweto Gospel choir sings with Bey

The Soweto Gospel and Mzansi Youth Choir made the country proud when they delivered a stellar performance alongside Beyoncé, bringing a bit of African flavour to the star’s song Halo.

3. Beyonce performs with Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran and Beyoncé were in the same venue at the same time, so it only made sense that the two would perform the remix of Ed’s hit track Perfect together. After the performs, which by the way lived up to the name of the song, Bey let fans in on a secret – that was the first time she had performed the song live with Ed before. And it happened right here in SA!

4. Bringing back the classics

Besides performing a lot of their new singles, Beyoncé and Jay-Z had the crowd going wild when they performed many of their classic tracks including 03' Bonnie & Clyde – their first official collab together.

5. Paying homage to South Africa

One of the things we loved most about Bey and Jay’s performance was there outfits. The couple paid homage to the country, with Beyoncé wearing a beaded gown that, according to her mother Tina, was made with one hundred thousand South African beads. Jay, on the other hand, rocked a black leather jacket with the Gauteng coat of arms on the back, and the South African flag incorporated into the left sleeve.

Beyoncé also wore a gown with matching coat that had all 54 African countries on it.
