5 things we learned when Beyoncé interviewed Solange

Cape Town – Big sis Beyoncé got on the phone with Solange in December for an interview published online for Interview magazine.

From talking about growing up together and their hometown to their music, this is what we learned from their chat:

1) Beyoncé is Solange’s biggest fan.

While Queen Bey admitted to her sister that it is "a bit strange" to be interviewing her, she also revealed that she’s her "biggest fan".

"Well, it is a bit strange, because we're sisters and we talk all the time, to be interviewing you. But I'm so happy to interview you because, clearly, I'm your biggest fan and I'm super proud of you," said Beyoncé.

2) Growing up with Beyoncé was like a "master class" in music for Solange.

When Beyoncé asked Solange where her inspiration comes from, this is what she said: "It varies. For one, I got to have a lot of practice. Growing up in a household with a master class such as yourself definitely didn't hurt. And, as far back as I can remember, our mother always taught us to be in control of our voice and our bodies and our work, and she showed us that through her example."

3) Solange wrote every lyric on her new album.

Yes, you read that correctly. Solange wrote every lyric on her new album!

When asked by her big sis what some of the misconceptions are about being a strong woman, she answered:  "One thing that I constantly have to fight against is not feeling arrogant when I say I wrote every lyric on this album. I still have not been able to say that. That's the first time I've actually ever said it, because of the challenges that we go through when we celebrate our work and our achievements."

4) If it wasn’t for Beyoncé, Solange probably wouldn’t have worked with her husband, director Alan Ferguson, on the visuals for the new album.

When Beyoncé asked Solange what is was like working with her husband, she said that it’s an experience that she will cherish for the rest of her life.

Having been scared to work with him years ago due to being in such a great relationship with him, Solange credited Beyoncé for making it happen: "You actually encouraged that and said, ‘I swear, you guys are going to be just fine and will probably make the best work that you have ever made because of the way that you love and respect one another and each other's vision'."

5) Solange thinks Beyoncé did a kickass job of being a big sis.

Of course Beyoncé had to ask how she did as a big sister! Solange’s answer: "You did a kickass job. You were the most patient, loving, wonderful sister ever."
