Afrikaans music legend dies

Johannesburg - Afrikaans musician and Boeremusiek legend, Nico van Rensburg, died on Sunday morning at 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria, his wife said.

Lydia van Rensburg said her husband, 76, died of acute heart failure. She said he suffered a heart attack on Saturday and was admitted to hospital.

"We were together for 10 years and it was the best time of our lives. It is very difficult to lose someone like that."

She said the funeral arrangements had not been finalised yet.

Van Rensburg, who played the concertina, won several awards for traditional Afrikaans music in his lifetime.

He was the patron the Boeremusiek Gilde (Guild).
