Johannesburg - Liz Mitchell, the lead singer of Boney M, arrived with her husband and background singers at OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
"I'm so excited to be in South Africa. I want to see a lot; everything! I want to see the people and the towns. I want to be with all my brothers and sisters," Mitchell said to onlookers with her hand pressed against her heart.
Boney M became famous in the late seventies and eighties with hits like Rivers of Babylon, Ma Baker and Daddy Cool. Locally, their Christmas music is very popular.
The group was formed in Germany in 1975 by singer and songwriter Frank Farian. He sang under the pseudonym Boney M , named after a former Australian television programme, Boney. The group has undergone several changes over the years, but in the end it was Liz Mitchell, Maizie Williams, Marcia Barrett and Bobby Farrell that made the disco-pop group famous.
Farrell died in 2010 in Russia. Mitchell is the only surviving member of the group.
'I'm the original voice'
Boney M also visited South Africa in 2008 during the Innibos Arts Festival in Nelspruit.
According to Mitchell, South Africa and former president Nelson Mandela have a special place in her heart.
"In the late eighties, we decided to rework the 1979 hit El Lute and name it Mandela. I would now really like to sing it for the first time here.
"Furthermore, I'll be singing all the well-known songs. I am the original voice of all the songs. We are going to have a heavenly time here."
Boney M originally planned to do three shows, but after the Carnival City show in Brakpan sold out, an extra performance was added on Sunday at 15:00.
They are also performing at Sun City on Thursday and is at the Grand West Casino in Cape Town on December 20.
