Johannesburg - Four grants totalling R46m have been paid to the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF).
"While we sympathise with their plight, we have to point out that there is no funding that is owing to them over and above what they have already received...," the National Lotteries Board (NLB) said in a statement on Monday.
"The NLB is concerned about statements made by the JPO that they will close their doors because the NLDTF has not funded them," it said.
The JPO's most recent application for funding was submitted on 28 April last year, a day before the deadline.
"This application has not yet been adjudicated," the NLB said.
"Applications are processed and adjudicated chronologically. If the current application is successful, the JPO will be advised."
Vigorous processes
It said the JPO's application would be favourably considered only if the board was satisfied that previous grants had been used in line with the grant agreement.
The NLDTF budget is R2bn.
In the last call for applications, the NLB received 13 500 applications with a combined fund request of R72bn.
"We reiterate that the NLB cannot guarantee funding to any applicant. There are vigorous processes that must be followed and the budget simply cannot guarantee that all successful applicants will be granted the amounts they request," it said.
Business rescue proceedings
On Friday, the Star reported that the JPO's staff and musicians were owed a minimum of R2.2m in salaries.
The orchestra held its last performance of the season in Parktown, Johannesburg, on Thursday evening.
Salaries for September and October were still outstanding, and 75% of the August salaries had been paid, fans were told at the performance.
Earlier this year, it was reported that the JPO had started business rescue proceedings and that a business rescue practitioner was helping it with a refinancing and restructuring plan.
