John Legend returns to SA

Mbombela - Rhythm and blues sensation John Legend is expected to dazzle music fans when he performs at the Annual Sixties Festival in Mpumalanga's capital city this weekend.

The organisers of the festival, Mo-Lite Production, said Legend would perform his anticipated One Night Only concert on Saturday.

"It is finally happening and there is excitement about Legend’s performance everywhere in the country," said company spokesperson Sam Sekgota.

However, he refused to disclose how much Legend was paid for his performance.

R Kelly

"I cannot disclose that information; I know it is of value to the public but it would land me in serious trouble with the funders," he said.

Sekgota said he could not confirm or deny information that Legend would be paid $630 000 to perform at the festival.

"According to the contract we signed with him, we cannot say how much we are paying him for the concert, so I cannot confirm or deny that price. But I can say we paid thousands of dollars because Legend is an A-class artists," he said.

He confirmed that the organisers had wanted to bring another United States artist, R Kelly.

"Yes, we tried to bring R Kelly, but because he had a (medical) operation he told us that he would only start performing in December," he said.

Sekgota said Legend would share the stage with local artists such as Zakes Bantwini, Theo Kgosinkwe, Teargas and Liquideep.

He will perform on Sunday October 15 at the Mbombela Stadium.

"This festival will be a scintillating weekend of good music, tourism and social responsibility," Sekgota said.

In a statement, Legend said he was looking forward to the concert.

"I'm thrilled to be returning to South Africa for what I'm sure will be an amazing festival. I hope my South African fans are ready to get lifted," said Legend.

Mbombela stadium spokesperson Ronny Moyo said the festival will take place from Thursday to Sunday.

"The organisers of this festival have confirmed that John Legend will perform for a one night only spectacular performance and we as the municipality are the hosts," said Moyo.

Sekgota said tickets for the pre party, happening on Friday, October 14 at Emnotweni Arena, are selling at R100.

He said tickets to the event would range from between R225 for general seats, R500 for the golden circle and R1 650 for the premium VIP suite.

Tickets are available via Ticketpros or any PostNet outlet, countrywide.
