Johannesburg - Afrikaans singer, Karlien van Jaarsveld, and her rugby player husband, Derick Hougaard, have divorced.
The couple officially split in the North Gauteng High Court on Monday only 42 days after Karlien announced on social media that she would be splitting from the ex-Springbok rugby player.
The law firm Adams & Adams represented Van Jaarsveld and released a statement in which they said the couple’s split was amicable and although it wasn’t an easy decision to end their marriage the welfare of their twins were the most important thing.
"They may have divorced as husband and wife, but no one can ever 'divorce' as parents, and they very well realize that their two boys will require a team effort from them to ensure that they receive all the love, care and attention they will be needing in years to come to grow up and become fine, balanced young men," Karlien’s attorney, David Scheepers of Adams & Adams Attorneys in Pretoria, said.
The summons issued by Karlien in the matter simply contained the usual allegation that both parties have lost their mutual love for each other and that neither of them wished to continue with the marriage.
A copy of the settlement agreement entered into was not available.
On direct questioning whether a third party was responsible for the breakup of the marriage, Scheepers indicated that the split was most certainly not due to a third party’s involvement.
He stated, however, that they were both dynamic, special people who deserve a new start and that the public should as such respect their decision and support them both through this difficult time.
