New Barbra Streisand album debuts at number one

Washington - Barbra Streisand showed a posse of hot young talent how it's done on Wednesday when her latest album Partners entered the Billboard 200 chart at number one.

It's the 10th chart-topping album for the 72-year-old singer, songwriter, author, actress and director with two Academy Awards and eight Grammys to her name.

The triumph comes almost exactly 50 years to the day when her 1964 album People hit number one, said the music industry trade journal on its www.billboard.com website.

Going straight to number one on the Billboard 200 has become commonplace for twenty-something divas like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift with big marketing machines behind them.

But by virtue of age alone, they can't hope to match Streisand's claim to having chart-topping albums in each and every decade since the 1960s.

Streisand is pitching Partners to a younger demographic, appearing Monday on NBC's The Tonight Show for a singalong with its host Jimmy Fallon, who is 32 years her junior.

Streisand's 34th studio album, Partners features duets with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Blake Shelton, her son Jason Gould and, from beyond the grave, Elvis Presley.
