Parlotones critique leads to lawsuit

Cape Town - A music journalist and a freelance director of stage productions are taking each other to court over alleged defamation.

Freelance music journalist Diane Coetzer is suing Eban Olivier, a freelance director of stage-and-musical productions, for R150 000 for libel.

Olivier reportedly attacked Coetzer personally after he read her review of a theatre production for rock group The Parlotones at Montecasino in July.

In her review Coetzer criticised certain aspects of the production - particularly the dancers, costumes and choreography.

According to the Daily Maverick, who originally published the review, Coetzer is suing Olivier for libel and/or damage to her dignity and reputation and claims R150 000 in damages. She also wants him to publish an apology where everyone who was his "friend" on Facebook at the time of the comment can read it.

A summons was issued to Olivier earlier this month which he will oppose.

Suspended

Olivier wrote on his Facebook page that he wants to run Coetzer over and said he would publish her photo in case people want to slap her.

Olivier, who worked on the production for 12 months, told Die Burger on Monday that his outburst was "a very natural reaction" to the review.

"She did not see the big picture. She took certain things completely out of context.

"I sought an outlet on Facebook.

"I later apologised and said I took it too far. She should do what she wants to do," said Olivier.

He later removed most of his comments on Facebook and posted an apology, and has suspended his Facebook page in the meantime.

Coetzer said she is suing Olivier because he had exceeded a limit and has not yet apologised to her directly.
