Cape Town – Legendary singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez has arrived in Cape Town and has been spotted in Woodstock where he's rehearsing for his shows at the Grand Arena, reports Die Burger.
John Langford, Chief Operating Officer of Big Concerts, told Die Burger that Rodriguez arrived in South Africa on Wednesday and that he's rehearsing at The Campus of Performing Arts in Woodstock.
"As I understand it, he hasn't had time to see the city yet. He's rehearsing most of the time," Langford said.
Rodriguez, who last visited South Africa in 2005, is scheduled to perform nine shows in South Africa.
Known for his albums Cold Fact (1970) and Coming from Reality (1971), Rodriguez was initially booked for only two shows, one in Cape Town and one in Johannesburg, but then another five shows were added due to an overwhelming demand from fans. Tickets for all shows are sold out.
Tour itinerary

Johannesburg

Big Arena, Carnival City
Folk hero
Rodriguez has been working on his music career in Detroit since the early 1960s.
It was also during this time that he launched his debut album Cold Fact. The album had been banned by the then apartheid government, but a bootleg recording of the album found its way into South Africa and became the official album for the young liberal resistance.
For the next two decades it was a nationwide phenomenon.
Yet, back in Detroit, Rodriguez had no idea that his music had secured him as a household hero for many in South Africa.
After rumours that Rodriguez had committed suicide, two South African fans set out on a journey to find out what really happened to their hero. This eventually led to the making of a documentary Searching For Sugar Man which has won several awards and has been nominated for an Oscar.
