Cape Town – Toya Delazy and Khuli Chana were the big winners at the 19th Annual MTN South African Music Awards (SAMA19) at the Sun City Superbowl on Saturday.
After kicking off the evening with an energetic performance alongside rapper Reason, Toya Delazy walked away with the Newcomer of the Year and Best Pop Album awards. Jax Panix also scooped the Best Producer award on Friday night for his work on Toya's breakout 2012 debut album Due Drop Deluxe.
Former Motswako protégé Khuli Chana took home the coveted Best Male Artist, Best Rap Album and Album of the Year awards.
Freshlyground scooped up the Group of the Year award while songbird Kelly Khumalo walked away as Female Artist of the Year.
The almost three hour long show which was broadcast on SABC1 witnessed some unique collaborations such as Zonke and Kabomo, ChianoSky with DJ Zinhle ft. Busiswa, Bobby van Jaarsveld with Oskido ft. Candy and Zozo & Sangere Superbeat.
Guest presenters for the evening included Rapulana Seiphemo, Tsholo Monedi, Gareth Cliff, Zahara, Loyiso Bala, Tailor and Pearl Thusi amongst others.
Major highlight
An emotional tribute to artists and other industry players that have passed on during the last year was movingly performed by Bongeziwe Mabandla, Nina Schumann, Steve Dyer, Herbie Tsoaeli and CH2 over a visual montage of these fallen icons.
A major highlight was the Album of the Year medley as Khuli Chana, Kelly Khumalo, Maleh, Ntokozo Mbambo and The Muffinz took to the stage and left the over 5 000-strong crowd in rapturous applause.
Menzi Ngubane and Sophie Ndaba closed off the night and presented the coveted Album of the Year to Khuli Chana.
